Parts & purchasing

Buy in a deliberate order so you are never stranded with incompatible or expensive parts. DIY totals land roughly $445–$1,000; a complete 1-to-7 tower often lists around $475–$548, so DIY wins mainly when shipping assembled towers is painful or metalwork is local.

Required parts

Qty Part Minimum specification Selection notes & links
1 Standalone duplicator controller 1 source + 7 target native-SATA channels; LCD/keypad; CD-DA; speed select; verify; firmware update

ACARD 1-to-7 class or Vinpower/Copystars equivalent. Confirm revision + drive compatibility.

8 SATA optical writers Full-height 5.25-inch, tray-loading, CD-R 48X/52X, CD-RW

Same model and preferably same firmware lot. One source + seven targets.

1 Primary enclosure Nine bays (one-box) or five bays (split)

Metal preferred for grounding and EMI.

0–1 Satellite enclosure Four 5.25-inch bays

Split build only. Rigid mount + rear exhaust.

1–2 Power supplies Quality ATX; strong 5 V and 12 V rails

400–500 W one-box; or 250–350 W + 200–300 W split. Prefer listed brands with OCP/OVP.

8 SATA data cables Latching, 30–60 cm inside a tower

Shortest practical length; avoid sharp bends.

4 ch Remote data-link hardware Shielded external + secured bulkheads; path < 1 m

Split only. One channel per remote drive.

2–4 Cooling fans 120 mm ball- or fluid-bearing with guards

Front/bottom intake, rear/top exhaust.

1 Power-switch solution ATX switch board or controller harness

Both enclosures powered before drive detection.

0–1 Dual-PSU synchronizer Listed relay or ATX dual-PSU sync module

Split build preferred startup method.

1 AC protection Quality surge strip or UPS

Required for production reliability. Microboards documents a protected strip or UPS.

1 set Hardware M3 screws, standoffs, grommets, strain reliefs, ties

Never pass cables through raw sheet-metal holes.

1 Test media lot Known-quality CD-R, ≥ 50 discs

Qualify one lot before production. Prefer CMC Pro / Taiyo Yuden-technology printable discs.

Cost framework

ComponentPlanning range
1-to-7 controller $95–$150
Eight matching writers $160–$320
One nine-bay case $75–$216
Two local/small enclosures $80–$220
PSU(s) $60–$140
Fans, cabling, switches, hardware $50–$120
Optional SSD/HDD $20–$50
Expected DIY total $445–$1,000

Purchasing sequence

  1. Controller with return rights and exact manual/firmware revision
  2. One candidate writer
  3. Quality CD-R media for qualification
  4. Remaining seven matching writers after the sample passes
  5. Local enclosure or used chassis
  6. PSU, fans, and ordinary internal cabling
  7. Split-enclosure bulkheads/links only if one-box remains impractical
  8. One spare writer from the same lot for paid production

Avoid untested assortments of used burners. Eight mismatched firmware lots can cost more in failed media than one matched set.
